Tonight all of the Shucker fellows young and old came
together in the Trustees Dining Room to learn specific dining rules and
manners. Upon sitting at a table, you enter the chair from the right side. If
you have a purse or jacket you should hang it on the back of the chair. Men
wearing sport-coats should only take them off if the host has taken his off or
if a woman at the table offers the option. Our three-course meal started off
with salad. We learned to eat salad using the smallest fork, or the one on the
outside. And you may not begin eating until the host or guest of honor has
lifted his fork. The host will
also pick up the basket of bread, container of dressing, or plate of butter and
pass it around the table. We learned two different ways to eat with a knife and
a fork, the American way and the European way. In the American way you are
allowed to switch your fork from hand to hand when cutting and then eating.
With the European way, the fork stays in the left hand so you can use it to cut
and then to eat. When finished, we learned to place the knife and fork parallel
to each other with the fork facing down at 10 and 4 on the plate. The meal was delicious and we had fun
putting all of this new knowledge into practice and fellowshipping with our
fellow Shucker members. I know some tables took the rules quite seriously but
it was great fun.
